Welcome to Illinois

Our first trip to A&E

Posted in Personal by Matt at WelcometoIllinois on October 12, 2008

Today we made our first trip to accident and emergency. Or the first for our second child anyway. I’m sure it won’t be our last. Nothing too serious, I’m pleased to say. He’s been clogged up with a snotty nose for a few days and last night it went to his chest. He sounds like a 20-a-day smoker.

Fortunately it sounds worse than it is, although the doctor suspects it could be the early stages of bronchiolitis although he is feeding well and seems to be getting better already so it should pass in a few days.

A benefit of having a child with Down’s syndrome (if that doesn’t sound too odd) is that medical staff don’t take any chances so we were seen pretty quickly. Even still a meeting with the nurse, two doctors and our little boy’s first X-ray meant a number of hours sitting around in waiting rooms – and there’s nothing more exhausting than that. We were all wiped out for the rest of the day.

Despite all the waiting around both boys behaved themselves impeccably and are currently either asleep or totally absorbed by Mary Poppins. I decided to write this down so I have a template for the inevitable future weekend medical emergencies. Hopefully all I’ll I need to do is change the medical condition and the name of the film and not the description of their behaviour.
