Welcome to Illinois

Our first trip to the physio

Posted in Personal, Support services by Matt at WelcometoIllinois on November 4, 2008

So we had our first appointment with the physiotherapist yesterday which went well. She was very pleased with our little boy’s progress, especially when she realised she had written his date of birth down wrong and that he is six and a half weeks old, not ten and a half weeks.

That also explained why she was saying how tiny he was at the start of the session! Given he was a month early for his first appointment she couldn’t give him the full assessment but he is so strong that he is “almost normal” in terms of floppiness (I must find out the technical term for this, in fact I just have: hypotonia) and his ability to lift his head.

In fact, she advised us on some stretches and exercises to make sure he is more fluid in his movements and not too stiff. The physio scared the life out of my wife by bringing up the subject of Atlantoaxial Instability assuming that we’d already heard of it, but soon put her/our minds to rest.

So we’ll be back in a few months to assess him properly on his responses to stimuli and other things. In the meantime, he is doing so well as far as his parents are concerned. One of our main concerns was about hypotonia and that we would end up wrapping him up in cotton wool, but it isn’t a concern.

He is so strong and loves pushing his legs and ‘standing’ and grabbing your finger. All normal reflexes I know, but given our fear of the unknown it is nice to enjoy him doing normal things.

Well, do you feel like you have started down the yellow brick road to OZ?

Great news! The sky is the limit, and it sounds like your son is already aiming high!
